Gerard and Betty wanted their Barrington Hills home to rely on ComEd as little as possible while maintaining the refined look and feel of their property. With a strong focus on aesthetics, performance, and long-term energy independence, they partnered with ilumen Solar to design a solar and battery solution that could handle complex energy demands without compromising style.
From early planning through system refinement, this project became a collaborative effort built on trust, transparency, and thoughtful engineering.
From the first conversation, Gerard and Betty were clear about what mattered most. They wanted a solar power company that would listen carefully, explain options clearly, and work through details without rushing decisions.
ilumen Solar earned their trust by taking the time to understand how the home used energy day to day and how that might change in the future. Rather than pushing a standard system, the team worked closely with the homeowners to engineer a solution that aligned with their goals. That level of collaboration ultimately set ilumen Solar apart.
The primary goal of this residential solar project was to significantly reduce reliance on the utility grid through a combination of solar panels and battery backup integration. Achieving that goal meant designing a system capable of supporting complex electrical loads while remaining flexible enough for future expansion.
Aesthetics played a major role in the design process. Panel placement, system layout, and battery configuration were carefully planned so the system blended naturally with the home rather than standing out. Every design decision balanced clean visuals with real-world energy production.

This project involved far more than a typical residential installation. The home’s energy demands required advanced troubleshooting, custom electrical work, and detailed battery configuration planning.
ilumen Solar worked through:
Each step required close coordination and clear communication to make sure the system performed as intended while remaining adaptable for future upgrades.
One challenge involved integrating an existing generator into the solar and battery system. While generator integration was part of the original plan, technical issues required ilumen Solar to step back from that portion of the project to ensure system reliability and safety.
Rather than forcing a solution, the team adjusted the plan, keeping the system operating smoothly while continuing to explore options. ilumen Solar is now working toward adding generator integration back into the system, along with additional battery capacity, as the project continues to evolve.
Support for generator maintenance and expertise was provided with assistance from JRC Generators in Crystal Lake, ensuring the system remains well-supported as improvements are made.
The result is a thoughtfully designed solar and battery backup system that supports the homeowners’ goal of energy independence while preserving the look and feel of their Barrington Hills home.

As with many ilumen Solar projects, the relationship didn’t end at installation. Through collaboration and problem-solving, Gerard and Betty became trusted partners and friends of the ilumen Solar team, with plans to reconnect soon, ideally over a backyard BBQ when the weather warms up.
